Necropolis of Pantalica- Our first Sicilian Hike
We had finally moved our legs……
Golly, there isnt anything else husband and I were craving more then a H I K E post quarantine….. Honestly, the kids may not have ever been on board so strongly either! The minute we knew that Nature was somewhat open here Andrew and I traded in our 4 seater rental for a bigger SUV and loaded up! Car, kids, fruit, music- Lets go! Im so late in the game, but I just discovered “All Trails” where I have been able to find hikes, the duration, the level etc with total ease…. Our first choice was perfection…. Google Maps
This place is a hidden GEM. Its about an hour south of our Home, easy drive down towards Syracuse… The Natural Reserve dates back from the 13th to the 7th centuries BC. housing over 4,000 tombs- It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site… If you are local, this is a must see! Read about its amazing history here !
Our hike ended up being all day, easily 6 hours of exploration, there is soooo much to see…. From flora and fauna, the caves and limestone, down to the gorge, we soaked Mother Earth back up… We met other hikers, including a cool couple traveling down through Europe from Germany with their puppy in a converted van, grounded barefoot resting on an ancient ruined Roman castle site, and listened to the sounds of Cow bells from across the hilltops. We played until the light changed and our tummies grumbled for Pizza, it was a fantastic Day…
Adventures like this tell me how much education my kids are getting from this lifestyle we live… To step into History off the pages of books and stories, to stand in a tomb used by Arabs and Greeks and Nomads, is so crazy cool. No matter where we have lived, overseas or stateside, we have found places to learn, grow from, appreciate, connect to in some way, and best of all, EXPLORE!
This will be a place for sure we will visit again and again… Till next time-xoxo
